Fate/stay night (フェイト/ステイナイト feito sutai naito^?) adalah sebuah visual novel berbahasa Jepang yang diproduksi oleh Type-Moon. Game ini dirilis untuk platform PC pada tanggal 30 Januari 2004. Game ini pernah menjadi visual novel terpopuler tahun itu. Studio Deen membuat adaptasi anime 24 episode untuk game ini yang ditayangkan di beberapa stasiun TV Jepang. Game ini juga telah diadaptasi sebagai manga oleh mangaka Nishiwaki Datto.
Pada terbitan Newtype bulan September diumumkan bahwa adaptasi film Fate/stay night yang sedang diproduksi oleh Studio Deen akan dirilis tanggal 23 Januari 2010.

Plot

Fate/stay night menceritakan rentang beberapa minggu dalam kehidupan Emiya Shirou , seorang murid SMA di Fuyuki, Jepang, ketika secara tiba-tiba ia terseret dalam pertarungan antar magi, Perang Cawan Suci (聖杯戦争 seihaisensou^?), untuk memperebutkan Cawan Suci (聖杯 seihai^?), sebuah benda sihir yang dipercaya mampu mengabulkan segala keinginan pemiliknya.
Kisah Emiya Shirou dimulai sepuluh tahun yang lalu. Dalam sebuah kebakaran hebat di Shinto, satu bagian dari Fuyuki, ia kehilangan orang tuanya (selanjutnya akan diketahui bahwa kebakaran ini terkait dengan Perang Cawan Suci saat itu). Seorang pria bernama Emiya Kiritsugu menyelamatkan nyawanya, dan mengadopsinya. Pada suatu malam purnama, Emiya Kiritsugu menceritakan sebuah rahasia, bahwa dirinya adalah seorang magus. Kiritsugu juga bercerita kepada Shirou mengenai sebuah impian yang tidak berhasil ia raih, yaitu menjadi seorang "Pahlawan Keadilan" (正義の味方 Seigi no Mikata^?). Shirou, yang sangat mengagumi penyelamatnya itu, bertekad meneruskan cita-cita Emiya Kiritsugu. Ia bersikeras agar Kiritsugu mengajarinya ilmu sihir (魔術 majutsu^?). Namun karena Shirou tidak mempunyai garis keturunan penyihir, ia tidak berbakat dalam ilmu sihir, dan hampir selalu gagal dalam mempelajari ilmu sihir paling dasar.

Suatu hari, setelah membersihkan dojo klub panahan di sekolahnya, tanpa sengaja Shirou melihat pertarungan antara dua servant, Archer dan Lancer. Lancer segera mengejar Shirou dan menyerangnya di koridor gedung sekolah. Hampir saja Shirou tewas, jika Tohsaka Rin tidak segera menolongnya dengan menggunakan salah satu permata sihirnya. Shirou yang terselamatkan segera pulang ke rumahnya, hanya untuk diserang sekali lagi oleh Lancer.
Pada saat itu secara tiba-tiba seorang gadis muda seumuran Shirou muncul dengan pakaian ksatria abad pertengahan. Kemunculannya menyelamatkan nyawa Shirou. Kepada Shirou, ia memperkenalkan diri sebagai Saber, seorang servant yang telah Shirou panggil.
